The PlayStation 2 (PS2) is Sony's second video game console. Announced in March 1999, first released in Japan on March 4, 2000. North America's launch would take place on October 26, 2000. The PS2 is the fastest selling gaming console in history, with over 100 million units shipped.
PS2 sold well because of the PlayStation brand and its backwards compatibility. Another major selling point for the PlayStation 2 is its ability to play DVDs. Sony released an online adapter in late 2002 for online gaming the service is free. A new slimmer PlayStation 2 model (SCPH-70000) was released in November of 2004. It had a built- in Ethernet port and lack HDD support. This model also rid the PS2 of DRE'S (see below). By the end of March 2005, there were 5,277 PS2 titles worldwide,
DRE's (Disc read errors) Owners of early PS2 models commonly reported faulty DVD-ROM drives in their consoles. The earliest drives suffered from the laser lens distance problems. The lens would either get too far or to close to the Game disc. The first problem is easy to fix; it requires opening the PS2 and twisting a gear to control the distance the laser lens would stay from the game disc, this voided the warranty Later defects were the result of voltage changes in the laser. Eventually this problem became widespread, and a class action lawsuit was filed against Sony. They lost and had to offer free repair and replacements at their discretion.
